About This Calculator

Converting an hourly wage to an annual salary is one of the most common salary questions in the US — especially when comparing a job offer that pays by the hour to a salaried position. This calculator handles the full conversion: standard hours, part-time schedules, overtime pay under FLSA rules, and multiple pay frequency breakdowns.

The standard US work year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). If your schedule differs — part-time, seasonal, or with unpaid time off — simply adjust the inputs. All figures are gross (pre-tax) salary.

Common Hourly to Annual Salary Reference Table

Based on 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours/year. All figures are gross annual salary.

How Overtime Is Calculated

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees in the US must receive overtime pay at a rate of at least 1.5× their regular rate for all hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. This calculator adds the overtime premium on top of the base hours — meaning if you enter 5 overtime hours per week, those hours are counted at 1.5× your hourly rate.

Effective Hourly Rate

When you work overtime, your effective blended hourly rate rises above your base rate. For example, at $25/hr with 5 hours of overtime per week, your effective annual rate across all hours worked is higher than $25/hr — because the overtime hours are paid at $37.50/hr. The hours summary in the calculator shows this effective rate.

Pay Frequency Breakdown

Pay Frequency Pay Periods / Year Formula Common Usage
Weekly52Annual ÷ 52Hourly workers, retail, restaurants
Bi-Weekly26Annual ÷ 26Most US employers (~43% of workers)
Semi-Monthly24Annual ÷ 24Salaried office workers
Monthly12Annual ÷ 12Less common in the US, more in consulting

PTO and Unpaid Time Off

Paid time off (PTO) does not reduce your annual salary — your employer pays you regardless of whether you are working or on vacation. If you want to calculate your earnings for a year with unpaid leave or a seasonal job, reduce your weeks per year accordingly. For example, 2 weeks of unpaid PTO means 50 weeks worked, not 52.

The "2 wks unpaid PTO" preset sets weeks to 50 while keeping hours at 40, reflecting a common US scenario for workers without a paid leave policy.
